Bog oak is European oak that was preserved for thousands of years beneath peat bogs—waterlogged wetlands where the lack of oxygen prevents normal decay. Over time, the wood’s tannins react with minerals and iron in the water, gradually darkening and transforming the material into something between wood and fossil. Some bog oaks are up to 8,000 years old; this piece is estimated to be around 6,000 years old and originates from Ukraine. When this tree was alive, the Egyptian pyramids had not yet been built. Today, bog oak is valued both for its rarity and for the insights it provides into ancient climates and human history. Collected in 2026
