Cholla cactus is native to the deserts of North and Central America. Its distinctive skeleton is an adaptation to extreme aridity, providing strength, low weight, efficient water transport, and minimal material use. Though unrelated, its porous structure resembles that of marine corals—both evolved to distribute stress efficiently, one in the desert and the other in the ocean. Cholla also reproduces in an unusual way: detached segments can root and develop into genetically identical plants, allowing entire stands to emerge from a single organism over time. What appears fragile is, in fact, a highly efficient architecture for survival. Collected in 2026
