Reclaimed from a historic building in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this Peroba Rosa is believed to date to the 18th century, when the town served as a key port in Brazil's colonial gold trade. Gold extracted from the mines of Minas Gerais passed through Paraty on its way to Portugal. For centuries, this wood endured Paraty's unique tidal system, where seawater flows through the streets of the historic center before returning to the sea, helping cleanse the city. The marks visible today are the result of that prolonged exposure, preserving the environmental history of the place. Collected in 2021
