Western Red Cedar grows along the Pacific coast of North America. Known for its distinctive sweet scent, the tree produces natural oils that protect it from insects, making its wood naturally resistant to pests. For many Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, cedar was known as the “Tree of Life” because it provided nearly everything needed to live: shelter, clothing, transportation, tools, medicine, and spiritual objects. Entire canoes, houses, totem poles, ropes, and woven garments were made from a single tree, making cedar one of the most culturally significant woods in North America. Collected in 2026
